Your date of delivery cannot be perfectly predicted, even if the exact date you concieved is known. Your doctor will work with you to set the most accurate estimated date of conception (EDC - also called "due date"). Using the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP) is universally used by medical professionals to determine your EDC, however other factors are also involved.
General Information
You may not have conceived on the day you had intercourse. Sperm can survive in the uterus for up to 3 days. LMP is the best constant from which to measure probable date of conception. Medically, 40 weeks is the best average length of pregnancy. Remember, the average month is 4 1/2 weeks long, not four. Since the number of weeks in a month varies, knowing how many weeks pregnant you are is much more accurate. Early ultrasounds are sometimes used to calculate EDC. Your doctor will work with you to establish the most accurate prediction of your EDC.
