What Women Aren't Told About Childbirth

( the best article about natural childbirth I've come across )

A new survey of mothers reveals some disturbing things about hospital maternity care that may make pregnant women want to take a closer look at their options.
Even in this age of cybervoyeurism and hyperinformation, the act of having a baby remains one of the few bodily activities about which many people choose to remain blissfully ignorant. This might best be described as the "but it won't happen to me" phenomenon. Understandably, women hope, despite all they may learn otherwise, that pregnancy, childbirth and parenting will go easier for them -- their baby will sleep, their feet won't swell to the size of melons and, of course, they will have an uncomplicated -- sweaty, perhaps, but not seriously painful -- labor.

Film Promotes Optimal Birth Experiences

A sneak preview of "The Business of Being Born," with actress and former talk show host Ricki Lake as executive producer, will be shown Tuesday at the Varsity Theatre, 1207 25th St. This is the only screening scheduled in Iowa. Directed by Abby Epstein, the film compares the experience of hospital births with midwife-assisted home births. An author who also looks critically at U.S. maternity care will be at the event. Jennifer Block, author of "Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care," will sell books and sign them beginning at 6 p.m. Block, whose book was released in June, will lead a discussion after the movie. The International Cesarean Awareness Network Inc. of Central Iowa and other sponsors are hosting the event. Kelly Sorensen, an event organizer, said they hope the program makes women more aware of their birthing options.

Are Modern Mums "too posh to push?"

Women opting for a caesarean delivery, rather than a natural one, could be four times more likely to die during childbirth, research has revealed. A major study of over 94,000 births found women who had planned a caesarean birth, favoured by celebrities like Victoria Beckham, are putting themselves and their babies at increased risk of serious complications.

The End of Childbirth 101?

Pregnant women are cutting childbirth class. Although women are more obsessed than ever with health during their pregnancies, they seem to have lost interest in learning about the end of pregnancy, also known as childbirth, reports the November issue of Fit Pregnancy magazine. “Fewer women are taking classes,'’ said Jeannette Crenshaw, president of Lamaze International. Ms. Crenshaw told the magazine that she believes several issues explain why women aren’t as interested in learning about childbirth. Many women, she says, are convinced they can’t deliver a baby without epidural pain relief. Television shows often depict birth as a dangerous event, even though serious problems are exceedingly rare among women delivering in the United States. And because many women work until nearly the last day of pregnancy, busy schedules often prevent them from scheduling a birthing class.

Lessons from a first time grandparent

www.newburyportnews.com

Last week, my wife and I were blessed with our first grandchild, a healthy 6-pound, 14-ounce baby girl. Despite the fact that we are the proud parents of a handsome son and two beautiful daughters, we are certain our granddaughter is the most gorgeous baby ever born. It must be true; her other set of grandparents said the same thing. We've also quickly learned that it is much easier being a grandparent than parent, and that parents, even in the best of circumstances, easily become exhausted, overwhelmed and insecure

The benefits of hiring a Doula

www.hometownannapolis.com
A doula provides emotional and physical support for prospective parents, guiding them through the birth process and acting as an advocate with health professionals. Although not everyone knows what a doula is, there are 139 members of DONA International in Maryland, and 12 in the Annapolis area, officials said. DONA is an Indiana-based association which provides support, training and certification for doulas. The term "doula" is derived from ancient Greek, meaning "woman's servant," according to the DONA Web site.
