Welcome Taylor Marie 12/5/2001

Around 3:30 a.m. on December 5th, 2001 I woke up with some mild cramps. This had happened the past few nights as well, but this time my back hurt with them. I paced the house until it was time for my husband to get up for work. I told him then that I thought I might be in labor and that I was going to call my midwife, but he should go on to work. I spoke to my midwife around 7:30 a.m. and she thought I probably was in labor as I was not having a little blood tinged discharge when I used the restroom. She suggested I head to the birth center since it would take about an hour from our house. I called my husband and told him to come on home that this might just be it. Well, he didn’t think it really was and didn’t make it home for another hour! When we finally got to the birth center around 10:00 a.m. I was checked and found to be at 3-4 cm, but stretchy. So, my midwife, Debbie, stripped my membranes to help things along. It sure did! The contractions instantly became a little more painful. My midwife suggested that we have some lunch while we waited for our room to be ready. We walked to the hospital across the street and my husband ate while I continued to have steady contractions. It was a beautiful day for December in Ohio and after lunch we walked with no coats to the car and got all my things together. I think it was around 11:30 when we were able to go to my room. Debbie encouraged me to sit on the birth ball during contractions and they began filling the jacuzzi tub. After it was ready I climbed in and turned on my nature music. I just floated around and visited with my mom who had recently arrived. Eventually the contractions became more unbearable and my mom got the nurse who decided to get my midwife back to the room. I got out of the tub and was checked and found to be at 7 cm. The pain had moved from my back to mostly in the front and down low. So my midwife and nurse got out aromatherapy oils and massaged my legs to distract and relax me. Things got really blurry around that time and the next thing I knew it was time to push. My husband was behind me on the bed and both my mom and mother-in-law each held a leg. I pushed for 45 minutes and then my daughter Taylor Marie made her appearance at 2:46 p.m. Taylor was beautiful!! Having them place her directly on my chest after she was born was an amazing feeling. My mom cut the cord because my husband didn’t want to. It was very special for my mom to cut the cord of her first grandchild, and her daughter’s, daughter. Thanks to the birth center, and my midwife I had a perfect experience that my husband and both my “mom’s” got to share in.
